The highlight of day one is the JGR Brown Jack Handicap, which commemorates Brown Jack – a horse who won races at an astounding seven different Royal Ascot Meetings.

QIPCO King George Day

QIPCO King George Day

The highlight of the meeting is Saturday’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. This Group 1 flat is always a fan favourite and is set to be one of the best races of the whole year.

£1.2 million is the total prize money available to owners, trainers, and jockeys on King George Day, which is why it attracts the very best racehorses. Over £700,000 of that goes to the winner of the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, making the race the highlight of Ascot’s midsummer meeting.

Established in 1951, the King George brings together the best of the season’s classic generation and older horses for what is regarded as Europe’s premier summer middle-distance race. It has been won by a host of equine stars, including Enable, Dylan Thomas, Galileo, Lammtara, Nashwan, and Dancing Brave, to name but a few.

Other highlights on the King George weekend race card include the Group 3 Princess Margaret Keeneland Stakes and the Gigaset International Stakes. King George Day is also one of the highlights of the social calendar, with well-dressed racegoers drinking champagne and eating picnics on the lawns all being part of the occasion.

The fun continues well after the racing is over too, as racegoers stay to listen to live music from the iconic Ascot Bandstand.

You’ll only be able to place a limited stake at these odds, but it’s well worth wagering if you are eligible.

Other concessions to consider include best odds guaranteed. If your horse wins at a bigger price than the one on your betting slip, this means your bet will be paid out at the higher odds.

King George Weekend Trends and Statistics

A deeper analysis of the trends and statistics for the King George shows that, surprisingly, you need to go back to 2001 to find the last Derby winner to go onto success in the race. In fact, only three horses from the classic generation have been successful in the last decade.

The fillies Enable and Taghrooda were both Oaks winners, whilst the 2011 winner Nathaniel had previously been successful in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Another interesting statistic is that the 2018 King George race winner Poet’s Word was the first five-year-old to win the King George since 1999. That means that four-year-olds have the best recent record in the race with six wins in the last ten years.

Horses trained by Sir Michael Stoute and John Gosden are always worth considering, with both trainers winning three editions in the last decade.
As the last 10 winners have all been returned at odds of 13/2 or lower, it’s easy to see why the King George is popular with punters.

JGR Brown Jack Handicap Trends and Statistics

Recent winners of the JGR Brown Jack Handicap have all been returned at odds of 3/1 or less, which means this is normally another punter-friendly race.
Typical winners have either been three-year-olds carrying below 8-7 or four-year-olds carrying between 9-4 and 9-12.

Another useful pointer is that the last five successful horses have all run between seven and 31 days prior to victory. Silvestre De Sousa is a jockey to watch out for as he rode both the 2014 and 2017 winners.

King George Weekend Tickets and Hospitality

If you’re thinking about attending this prestigious meeting, it’s always a good idea to check the King George weekend dress code first. Some of the cheaper tickets start from as little as £15 and dress in these sections is quite relaxed.

But, if you’ve spent up to £300 on tickets to enjoy being wined and dined in style, make sure you’re wearing the correct attire for the area you’ve booked.
If this is your introduction to horse racing, and you’re in any doubt about what to wear, always dress up at Ascot. In general, horse racing is always a resplendent occasion where many visitors dress to impress.

Men will be required to wear a jacket and tie in many areas. Ladies are also encouraged to wear a hat, but this isn’t compulsory as it is in many areas at the Royal Ascot Meeting.

If you’re driving to Ascot, make sure you book your King George weekend parking early as the limited spaces are normally in hot demand.
